FEDERATION FLEET OVERVIEW. UNITED FEDERATION OF PLANETS: STARFLEET DIVISION Basic Overview and Breakdown of Major Starfleet Starship Classes Note: All images are to scale unless otherwise noted.
Starfleet starships are identified by a unique registry consisting of a two-or three-letter prefix, a string of digits, and, in some instances,a one-letter suffix. The combination is also called a ship'sregistry number despite the presence of letters. The mostwell-known registry among Star Trek fans is 'NCC-1701', whichbelongs to the original USSEnterprise commanded by Captain James T. Kirk. Allsubsequent Enterprises used the same registry with asuffix of A-E (with -J being seen in Star TrekEnterprise,) denoting each vessel in chronological order.
Unless otherwise indicated, registry numbers cited are eitherclearly visible on a ship's hull or clearly spoken aloud.
|
Use
Registry numbers are painted on a starship's hull. In theStar Trek: The Next Generation episode 'The Best of BothWorlds', Lieutenant CommanderElizabeth Shelby identifies ships destroyed by the Borg based ontheir hull markings.[1] Inother episodes, such as TNG's 'The Wounded', ships areinstead identified via a transponder.[2]
In 'The Wounded', Star Trek Nemesis and otherinstances, computer displays represent a ship's position with anicon for its affiliated organization (e.g. a Starfleet shield) next to both the ship'sname and its registry number.[2][3]
Prefixes
NCC
'NCC' is the most common registry prefix, used by almost everyknown Starfleet vesselin the franchise. The prefix first appears in Star Trek: TheOriginal Series and was created by designer Matt Jefferies. The Star TrekEncyclopedia[4]says:
“NCC doesn't stand foranything. It was devised by Matt Jefferies, art director of thefirst Star Trek series. Jefferies, who is a pilot, based NCC on20th century aircraft registration codes. Insuch 20th century usage, an 'N' first letter refers to an aircraftregistered in the USA. A 'C' second letter refers to a civilaircraft. Jefferies added a second 'C', just because he thought itlooked better. Think of it as being like the arbitrary three-lettercode that's part of automobile license plate numbers in manystates.”Jefferies attributed the extra 'C' to a combination of the USaviation code 'NC', and the Soviet equivalent 'CC CC'.[5]
In The Original Series, the only registries seen on aship's hull are for vessels of the same class as theEnterprise. Jeffries chose '1701' for legibility at adistance, rationalizing it as being the 1st ship of the 17thdesign.[6]However, non-canon sources dictate that every class starship'sprototype holds that class' namesake. The Enterprise beinga Constitution-class vessel, the first ship would be named Constitution.
According to non-canon print sources, 'NCC' is short for'Naval Construction Code' or 'Naval Construction Contract'.[7]
NX
Three ships which were the first of their class seen on screenhave a registry beginning with 'NX'.
The first of these is the USS Excelsior, whichfirst appears in the movie Star Trek III: The Search forSpock J.cole mp3 download. , with the registry 'NX-2000'. It is the first of the newExcelsior class. Bythe time of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, it isseen in active duty, with the registry 'NCC-2000'.
The USSDefiant is the first of a class designed to fight the Borg.[8]Although the ship sees extensive service before and during the Dominion War, itnever loses the 'NX' in its registry, even though other ships ofits class bear 'NCC' registries (e.g. the NCC-74210 for the USSValiant[9]and NCC-75633 for the USS São Paulo[10]).The latter of which was renamed to the USS Defiant, along with theDefiant's NX registry, after the destruction of the original.
The experimental USS Prometheus hasthe registry number 'NX-59650'. However the registry on all theinternal displays and the ship's dedication plaque is stated as'NX-74913'.[11]
The USS Dauntless, a ship made to look like aFederation starship, has the registry NX-01-A in the Star Trek:Voyager episode 'Hope and Fear'.
The Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manualclaims that the USS Galaxy is the first of the Galaxy class, and givesits registry as NX-70637. A Galaxy-class USSGalaxy is later seen in Star Trek: Deep SpaceNine, with the registry NCC-70637.[12]
NX class
A significant use of 'NX' is in 'NX-01': the registry for thecenterpiece of the titular starship in Star Trek:Enterprise.[13]However, in that series, 'NX' is not the designation for anexperimental starship; rather, it indicates the vessel's class. TheNX-01 is an NX class starship[13] inthe same way that some starships in 'later' series are Constitution or Excelsior classvessels.
Otherprefixes
A handful of other prefixes sporadically appear in various StarTrek series.
Registry | Name | Class | Role |
---|---|---|---|

Numbers
Whereas the majority of known starships share the 'NCC' prefix, the digits following that prefix (separated from it by a hyphen)are, with few exceptions, unique to each known vessel.
Two freighters in the non-canon animated series have the only tworegistries known to mix letters with the registry's digits: anunnamed robot freighter ('NCC-G1465'[23]) andthe USS Huron ('NCC-F1513'[24]).
Star Trek: Enterpriseera
Only two Earth Starfleet ships' registries are legibile onscreen: 'NX-01' for the Enterprise[13]and 'NX-02' for the Columbia.[25]However,in the Mirror universe, there is an ISS Avenger, 'NX-09'.
BetweenEnterprise and The Original Series
Few episodes refer to ships from this era and fewer still revealthose ships' registry numbers. The only firmly established registrynumber in this era is 'NCC-173' for the USS Essex[26].The Star TrekEncyclopedia claims that the USS Archon, mentioned but not seen in 'The Return of the Archons',has the registry 'NCC-189'.
The OriginalSeries and TOS film era
Most starships seen or mentioned in The Original Serieshave four-digit registry numbers beginning with '16', '17' or'18'.[27][28]One exception is the 'NCC-1017' registry for the USSConstellation: the show's modelmakers used an oldEnterprise model and simply rearranged the registrynumbering.[4]Because the USS Constitution's registry number is'NCC-1700', the Constellation's number is an inconsistencyto the pattern of the first ship in a class having the lowestregistry number among ships of thatclass.
Two of the major Starfleet vessels introduced in theTOS-era films – the USS Reliant and USS Excelsior – alsohave four-digit registries: 'NCC-1864'[29]and 'NX-2000'[30](later 'NCC-2000'[31]),respectively. Other vessels generally follow this pattern,[31][32]although there are a few vessels with three-digit registries. Themost obvious one is the use of 'NCC-638' for the USSGrissom.[30]Other examples include 'NCC-621' and 'NCC-595' for the scoutsColumbia and Revere, respectively.[30][33] Inthe Remastered version of 'Star Trek' currently on air, the episode'Charlie X' visually features the cargo vessel 'Antares' with theregistry NCC-501 upon its hull, although the registry prior to theremastering was never seen or mentioned in the original episode.[34]
The Next Generation etal. era
Starfleet ships in Star Trek: The Next Generation,Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek:Voyager generally use five-digit registry numbers. The mostfrequently seen 'guest' ships are Excelsior classstarships whose registries range from the USS Berlin's'NCC-14232'[35]to the USS Crazy Horse's 'NCC-50446'.[36]Most vessel registries in The Next Generation fall withinthis range. Registry numbers in the 60000s and 70000s are morecommon in Deep Space Nine (featuring the 'NX-74205'[8]and 'NCC-75633'[10]USSDefiants) and Voyager (featuring the titular NCC-74656[37]).
BeyondTNG
The time ship USS Relativity from the 29th century hasthe six-digit registry 'NCV-474439-G'.[17]
Suffixes
In Star Trekcanon, the addition of a one-letter suffix to the registry ismost notably used by successors of the USS Enterprise(NCC-1701).
USSEnterprise
Starfleet reuses the originalEnterprise's 'NCC-1701' registry with each newlycommissioned Enterprise, differentiating between vesselsby affixing a letter to the end; 'NCC-1701-E' is the registryfor the sixth starship Enterprise to carry 'NCC-1701' aspart of its registry.[38]These Enterprises are generally differentiated byreferring to them as, for example, 'the Enterprise-B'for the NCC-1701-B[39]or 'the Enterprise-C'for the NCC-1701-C.[40]When facing the destruction of the Enterprise-E, CaptainJean-Luc Picardquips that Starfleet will likely build another Enterprisebecause there are 'plenty of letters left in the alphabet'.[38]Although not canon, an Enterprise-F appearsin two Star Trek novels.[41][42]An Enterprise-J serves in analternate timeline's 26th century.[43]
USSExcalibur
After the destruction of the Ambassador-class USSExcalibur (NCC-26517) in Peter David's best-selling non-canon NewFrontier series,[44]Starfleet commissions a Galaxy classExcalibur with the registry 'NCC-26517-A'.[45]
USSRelativity
The 29th century time ship USSRelativity has the registry NCV-474439-G. Followingthe pattern used with the Enterprises, this suggests thatthe Relativity is the eighth ship to carry the name. However, the vessel's dedication plaque indicates that it is theseventh Relativity.[17]
USSYamato (error)
CommanderWilliam Riker readsthe registry of a phantom USS Yamato as'NCC-1305-E'.[46]However, this conflicts with the shooting model, which bears the registry 'NCC-71807'in both this and a subsequent appearance.[47]Despite the dialogue, 'NCC-71807' is the correct registrynumber.[4]
Classes
Federationclass
The Federation-class dreadnought is a ship type first posited byFranz Joseph's Star Trek Star FleetTechnical Manual. The Federation-class is similarto the Constitution-class, but has an additional nacelle.According to the scale presented in the Manual, it is also somewhatlarger, with armament and a rear-facing 'sensor dish' (note thatthe navigational deflector is labeled as a sensor dish in theManual) on the secondary hull. https://intensiveheat.weebly.com/adobe-after-effects-intro-templates.html. Odd-nacelled designs are rarely seenon screen: the one-nacelledFreedom-class appears as a wreck, and the Enterprise-D has beenfitted with a third nacelle in the possible future shown in 'All GoodThings..'.
At the start of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, theDreadnought Entente, NCC-2120 is mentioned in radiochatter, matching the name and registry for one of theFederation-class ships given by Joseph. A picture of the Joseph'sclass appears on a computer screen in Star Trek II: The Wrathof Khan.
Diane Carey'snovel Dreadnought! heavily features the three-nacelled,Federation dreadnought the USS Star Empire. Its registrydisagrees with that given by Joseph (as does the claim that is itthe class prototype: Joseph gives this as the USSFederation NCC-2100).
List Of Starfleet Vessels
The Star Fleet Battles gaming universepresents the dreadnought as 50% larger than the heavy cruiser(Constitution and Enterprise classes) but it has little increase infirepower and is not up to par with the dreadnoughts of otherraces. Its justification is mostly as a command ship in fleetoperations but is eventually phased out in favor of thebattlecruiser classes (represented by the Excelsior classcruisers). T- shirt designs free.
Along with the Saladin class ships, the Federation class can beseen at various intervals throughout the simulator of theEnterprise bridge in The Wrath of Khan, displayed in a schematicview on various displays.
Norwayclass
In real life, the Norway class was designed by Alex Jaeger at Industrial Light &Magic and rendered as a computer-generated visual effect forStar Trek: First Contact. However, the computer files wereirrevocably corrupted before they could be used again following themovie. Therefore, very little is known about the ship. In fact, theactual design of the ship is slightly controversial, as there aretwo known images of the ship: One in the Star Trek tech manuals, and one in the background of the movie. The only known ship is theUSS Budapest.
NX class
The concept artists responsible for the design of the Enterprise (NX-01), themain ship of the series Star Trek: Enterprise, have saidthat they based the general external layout of the NX-class on theAkira-class,[48] sincethat class had only appeared in the background of effects shots andwas never prominently featured.
Ptolemyclass
The Ptolemy class tug is another starship that exists in the Star Fleet TechnicalManual. It consists of the same saucer-shaped primary hullcommon to the Constitution-class cruiser, theSaladin-class destroyer and the Hermes-classscout. Two warp nacelles are attached by pylons underneath theprimary hull–there is a towing plate in the center designed tocarry cylindrical cargo containers where the secondary hull wouldbe on a Constitution-class ship. These cargo pods can comein various designs, depending on what cargo needs to be moved.
This ship class makes an appearance in an 'episode' of the StarTrek: 25th Anniversary computer game as the USS Masada, a starshiptaken over by Elasi pirates.
Saladinclass
The Saladin class is a type of starship that originated in FranzJoseph's Star Fleet TechnicalManual. Diagrams from this Technical Manual were used in bridgedisplays in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. The Technical Manualdesignates it is a 'destroyer', and claims the first ship of thisclass is the USS Saladin, NCC-500. The ship has only onenacelle.
The video game Star Trek: Legacy features a starship ofthe same design as the Saladin but instead refers to it asApollo class. This ship can be used during the first partof the Original Series section of the game. Later, theship gets a restyle similar to the Enterprise-A's refit, this time with two similar warp nacelles. This version is dubbedthe 'Apollo-class refit.'
Wellsclass
Starfleet Vessels Pdf List
The Wells class is a 29th century Federationtimeship class in theStar Trek: Voyager, appearing in the episode 'Relativity'.The episode's titular ship, the USS Relativity, is theonly Wells-class ship to appear in Star Trek. TheRelativity also appears in the non-canonStarTrek: New Frontier comic book, attempting to prevent MackenzieCalhoun from changing history.
The ship has a small, single hull with warp nacelles that arepod-like in appearance. The class is named after H. G. Wells, author ofThe TimeMachine.

Some say the line between good and evil is narrower than we imagine -- a divide as subtle as a mirror, and perhaps just as deep. To peer into its black, reflective glass is to know the dark potential we each possess, and we cross that obsidian boundary at our peril . . . into a world where we no longer recognize who we are or what we believed ourselves capable of. In the late twenty-fourth century, decades after the fall of the once-mighty Terran Empire, the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance dominates the worlds that, in another reality, made up the United Federation of Planets. Humanity and its former subject races are now bound together by their shared oppression, slaves to their cruel and brutal conquerors. But a downtrodden few have found the courage and the strength of will to act. Inspired by visitors from another continuum to fight for their freedom, they have rekindled hope . . . and rediscovered an ancient truth: that every revolution begins with a vision. Star Trek: VOYAGER ® A rebel ship commanded by a former slave named Chakotay attempts to evade pursuit in the Badlands . . . only to encounter a strange ship that was catapulted seventy thousand light-years across the galaxy. On board the craft are two aliens, one of whom has the potential to completely alter the balance of power within the Alliance. But as both sides of the struggle race to get to the stranger first, treachery throws all schemes into a tailspin. Star Trek: NEW FRONTIER ® Following the Terran Empire's collapse, its longtime rival, the Romulan Star Empire, has absorbed many of the fringe civilizations spread across that part of the galaxy. One of the Romulans' slaves is M'k'nzy of Calhoun, a savage and unpredictable Xenexian who dreams of death . . . and who learns the value of freedom from the unlikeliest of teachers, a Romulan named Soleta. Star Trek: DEEP SPACE NINE ® One fallen dictator's struggle to regain her power and her position leads to the discovery of a bold rebel plan for a decisive military strike against the Alliance. But while Kira Nerys navigates the dangerous road of politics, sex, and military intrigue that she believes will lead her back to reclaiming the Intendancy, cracks form in the rebel leadership, leading to a showdown that will change the course of the Mirror Universe.
